In the self defense classes I took, the instructor did warn us of a maneuver that would likely break someone's neck and kill them, but it involved wrapping your arm around their neck while they were bent towards you, pulling up very tightly, and dropping to the floor - much harder and much more force than a movie. A broken neck simply means that you have a fracture in any part of the seven bones that make up the cervical (i.e. Neck) section of your spine, Thomas D. Cha, M.D., assistant chief of spine. How Much Pressure Does It Take to Break a Neck? To break the neck of a human, 1,000 to 1,250 foot-pounds of torque is considered sufficient. When hanging someone, a typical drop of 5 to 9 feet is enough to generate the force required to break the neck when the person hits the end of the rope. A foot-pound of torque is 1 pound of force applied.
Crack is a slightly different form of cocaine that is mixed with another basic chemical such as ammonia or baking soda. When smoked, crack produces a very fast, very intense feeling of euphoria. Unfortunately, this feeling is extremely addictive. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, around 72 percent of cocaine related drug treatment admissions are due to crack cocaine. This is a startlingly high statistic considering the dangers of smoking crack. Users often underestimate the dangers of using crack cocaine.
Immediate side effects
Many of the immediate side effects of crack cocaine are extremely dangerous. As an intense stimulant, it increases certain functions within the body. When smoked, crack passes through the lungs, into the bloodstream and right to the brain. Many of these reactions lead to seizures, coma, and death. The dangerous immediate effects of smoking crack are:
As if these short term effects are not dangerous enough, many of these lead to long term problems.
Long term physical side effects
When people think of drug use they do not always consider the lasting damage that a drug like crack cocaine can do. Some of the long term effects of crack are:
According to the US National Library of Medicine research into the long term effects of crack and cocaine is still ongoing. There is a lot that researchers still do not know about the long term consequences of this addiction.
Addiction
Addiction to crack cocaine comes with its own dangers. Users describe their first experience with crack as the most profound euphoria that they have ever felt. Unfortunately, they spend the rest of their time chasing that euphoria. This is because crack starts doing damage the first time that it is used. This is partly the reason why it is so addictive. When they start chasing that high, they forget almost everything else. They become emaciated, their teeth rot, their physical appearance becomes sallow and pocked with sores, and they will do anything to get the drug.
The social effects of addiction are just as dangerous as the physical ones. Family and friends who do not use start to avoid the addict. While the addiction is controlling an individual, it is impossible to form lasting relationships or have meaningful encounters. Because crack addicts often steal and lie to get the money for the drug, friends soon find it impossible to trust them. The sense of betrayal that they feel may never go away.
Financial and legal dangers
Dc%2b%2b for mac sierra. When people are addicted to a drug, they often show up to work high or in withdrawal. They cannot perform their jobs while in this state. This leads to poor work performance. When the drug starts to take control of their lives, they may be late to work or not show up at all. Usually crack addicts become unemployed shortly after they start taking the drug. An employer will not tolerate a user for very long. The lack of employment leads to a lack of money and financial insecurity. An addict may use rent, food, or utility money for drugs. They become homeless and sometimes resort to criminal activity.
This criminal activity leads to another sort of danger. Prostitution, trafficking, possession, and theft all lead to arrest. When an addict is desperate, they might do any of these things to get the drug they need. Usually these activities lead to arrest and incarceration. Both of which are extremely expensive and dangerous.
Crack is dangerous
Crack cocaine is considered by many to be one of the most addictive and dangerous illicit drugs. It can ensnare the user after only one try. Smoking crack causes irreparable damage to most of the user’s internal organs. Not only can it kill on the first try it starts to consume a person almost immediately. Smoking crack can destroy a person’s life, health, and happiness in very little time.
How gruesome. Someone in one of my classes wanted to know if you could kill someone by twisting their neck like in the movies.
Here is what happens from the anatomy-physiology side. They’re imagining that the neck breaks at C1 or C2, and sends pieces into the upper spine to cut off breathing or heartrate regulators. It’s a slower death than they make it look like in the movies, but someone can be paralyzed easily if those chards break off the crucial parts of the spinal cord.
Reality-wise:
Vortex failed to deploy mods. It’s harder than the movies make it look. It seems so easy to twist and pop the neck like they do, but in reality, the opponent is struggling. The neck muscles are stronger than they appear in the movies. Someone needs a good grasp and break a specific spot.
How Does Snapping A Neck Kill You Today
You can die from a C2 fracture, but to get that to break, you need A LOT of force, more than what it appears they show in the movies. This fracture often happens in a car crash. A C2 fracture like this is called a “hangman’s fracture,” see below regarding hanging.
Tangent:
This reminds me of when I was hired to help make a scary Halloween movie look realistic. I think it was around 2005-2007. The writers and producer asked me how long it would take to kill someone when that person is isolated or trapped in a box or a trunk of a car.
I said something like it would take a long time, depending on the size of the box. Person would suffocate, jerk around in a panic, and then go unconscious. Could still be recoverable at this time, but it’s a slow, non-exciting death.
Needless to say, it wasn’t what they were looking for. They paid me for my time and then dismissed me from the project. I don’t even think I made the credits.
What happens in the movies doesn’t always happen in real life. Real life can be boring. Real life doesn’t always sell tickets.
Other neck breaks – hanging:
The gruesome discussion got me thinking about hanging deaths. I remember studying this in pathology. If the neck is broken, again it requires a lot of force, they are thinking the C2 (again) breaks off and severs the spine.
If you don’t get enough force, it’s likely the person will just suffocate and die that way.

Other neck breaks – Superman:
This reminds me also of Christopher Reeve, who became a quadraplegic after a horse-riding accident. His injury is an example of what may happen with a C1-C2 fracture. Based on a Wikipedia article, it appears that the horse suddenly stopped and he was thrown over and landed on his head. His helmet saved his cranium from any fractures, but the force of his 200+ pound body on his neck caused the fracture there.
Footnotes, because I feel responsible:
Be responsible! Do not let me be an accessory to murder or suicide. Get help if you (or someone you know) need it. Material items I talked about above can be found widely found online with a Google search (which is what I did, to add on to some of my background knowledge). Some discussions were retrieved from martial arts blogs and discussions.
Like all other postings on this blog, I strive to help my alums understand anatomy (and sometimes physiology and microbiology). We’re focusing on the medical aspects – trying to understand things people rarely talk about, without limitations, if I can help it.
